The cooperative dictated that when one hundred families populated the society, control of their land would be signed over to them. Later on, the members of the Common Good Society were swindled out of their claims to the springs by Hawk, who sold them. Protests lasted for years, and it was theorized that Kenneth Burks was even killed over the ownership and pushed in front of a train on his way to New York while holding physical proof that the sale of the springs was illegal. Walking the Old Crystal Springs Cemetery, you’ll see that many plots belong to pioneers of the innovative socialist agricultural community that ultimately failed.

The society built a community building for regular meetings and used it as a church. The residents wanted an honest-to-goodness church, and they had the idea to recruit John Nutting, who was then an octogenarian. The revered and highly popular hymn “Little Brown Church in the Vale” had been written by Dr. William S. Pitts from the church in Nashua, Iowa, that Reverend Nutting pastored. The Crystal Springs residents wanted to create their own unique version of the Little Brown Church that featured a tower to accommodate a band of several pieces designed by Nutting himself. It was dedicated in November 1914, and Nutting pastored there until his death. A flood in the 1920s devastated parts of the area, and the Little Brown Church became a chicken house; thus, the Little Brown Church met extinction as well.
